Whale & Dolphin Watching in Sri Lanka

1. Mirissa (South Coast)

Mirissa is the most famous spot for whale watching in Sri Lanka. Located between Galle and Matara, it’s a prime location to see blue whales, sperm whales, and playful spinner dolphins. The season runs from November to April, when the sea is calm and sightings are most frequent.

2. Trincomalee

    (East Coast)

On the east coast, Trincomalee is another whale-watching hotspot. Here, you can often see blue whales and Bryde’s whales, along with large pods of dolphins. The season runs from May to October, making it the perfect alternative to Mirissa when the south coast seas are rough.

3. Kalpitiya

     (Northwest Coast)

Kalpitiya is world-renowned for dolphin watching, with large pods of spinner dolphins often numbering in the hundreds. While blue whales and sperm whales are sometimes spotted, the main highlight is the massive dolphin gatherings. Best season is November to April.
